Cool and relaxing office space in summer or warm and snug bedroom in winter- HVAC systems are integral for indoor climate control. Keeping you safe from extreme temperatures while providing a sustainable and agreeable environment throughout the year, your HVAC does a lot of work! However, effective heating, cooling, and ventilation require significant energy consumption.

In other words, wouldn’t it be more reasonable if you had to spend less while retaining the comfort level? Increasing the efficiency of your HVAC system also reduces the carbon footprint. Indeed, seasonal HVAC services are imperative to extend the lifespan of heating and cooling units and optimize their performance. Nonetheless, there is more to it!

In this blog, we at GB Heating and Cooling will guide you on maximizing HVAC efficiency with simple and effective steps. Let’s keep your interiors comfortable while paying less for it!

Effective Strategies to Increase HVAC Efficiency

  • Improve Insulation– The most basic thing to begin with is proper insulation of your building. When you have sufficient barrier between the indoors and outdoors, your heating and cooling needs will automatically reduce. The indoors will remain cool in summer and warm in winter. Floor, attic, walls, and crawl space insulation, sealing cracks and gaps, and choosing the ideal R-value are the best ways to insulate a property adequately.
  • Increase Ventilation– Needless to say, ventilation is crucial for airflow circulation. It not only boosts a fresh indoor environment but also improves air quality by eliminating humidity, pollutants, and allergens. Thus, along with HVAC installations, focus on installing vents, air purifiers, and exhaust fans.
  • Install Correct HVAC Size– An undersized or oversized HVAC consumes more energy. An undersized system has to work harder to meet the comfort needs, often resulting in overheating. While an oversized unit causes frequent cycling with inconsistent temperature. Hence, always seek expert consultation before installing an HVAC.
  • Utilize Zoning– Zoning means installing dampers in your air duct for controlled airflow in specific areas of your space. It allows targeted heating and cooling, which is a highly energy-efficient approach. All you need is a separate thermostat for each zone that can regulate temperature per your needs.
  • Increase the Use of Ceiling Fans– While it may occur that why you need a ceiling fan despite having an HVAC, let’s tell you that ceiling fans improve air circulation. They evenly distribute airflow and you can set your thermostat in an energy-saving mode without compromising comfort. Switch fan direction according to seasons.
  • Clean Air Ducts– Cleaning the air ducts periodically is a pivotal HVAC maintenance aspect. Filthy and blocked air ducts restrict air circulation, which considerably stresses your HVAC. The system consumes more energy to deliver optimal performance. Additionally, clean ductwork means improved indoor air quality.
  • Replace Air Filters– Though you may clean the air filters regularly, consider replacing them every 90 days. No matter how well you maintain them, they eventually lose their ability to trap airborne contaminants. Hence, replacing air filters is necessary to increase HVAC lifespan and efficiency. You pay lower utility bills.
  • Seal Air Ducts– Even a small crack, hole, or loose joint in the air ducts can cause air leakage. As a result, you may experience inconsistent temperatures and poor air quality. Your HVAC has to work harder to meet your comfort needs. Therefore, seek immediate HVAC repair if there are leaks or other issues.
  • Switch to Smart Thermostats- Invest in smart thermostats which set temperature automatically based on your daily requirements. You can access them remotely, enabling you to control indoor climate even if you are away. Smart thermostats are an effective way to minimize energy usage and curtail carbon footprint.
  • Clean the Outdoor Unit– The outdoor or condenser unit is constantly exposed to harsh dirt, dust, and debris. Tall grass or leaves and twigs often block airflow, leading to overheating. Hence, wash the condenser unit thoroughly and keep the area clean to maximize air circulation.
  • Upgrade the HVAC Model– Modern HVACs are a lot more energy efficient, and they offer a wide range of customization options. You receive optimal comfort while paying less for the bills. Upgrading your HVAC is indeed a smart idea!

Fantastic customer experience with GB Heating and Cooling, from the on-site quote to installing a new Lennox HVAC system (AC Condenser Unit, Furnace, Evaporator Coil, AprilAire Air Purifier, and Condensate Pump). The family-owned business provided a very fair quote, which provided a more efficient and mid-level unit compared to other HVAC companies at the same price (for only the AC Condenser Unit and Evaporator Coil), providing less efficient and base-level units. The installation team started their work in a timely manner and ended in a professional manner by cleaning up the work area. Installation started at 10:30 AM and ended around 7 PM, but the on-site lead wanted things to be done with perfection and intent regardless of how long it would take. For example, the previous HVAC system had level drain pipes from the HVAC/Humidifier, but during the re-pipe, it was sloped to prevent the backflow into the system. The small detail may not be known by the average consumer, but the lead did it anyway to prevent any future issues and doing it right the first time. It was a great experience with the company, and I hope others call them for any HVAC services!
